Turkey in the Ground

A brief overview about the beloved tradition at

Turkey in the Ground?  You did say "turkey" didn't you?  In the ground?  Seriously?

The Thursday before Thanksgiving Break (that’s November 17 this year) is affectionately referred to as “Digging Day” here at TCA. Throughout that day, students in all grades work in shifts to dig a large pit in the lot beside Eagle Gym. After school dismisses, a bonfire is built and set aflame in the pit. That evening, Barber Gym will be the site of a silent auction featuring gift baskets, class projects, and other items as well as the TCA Athletic Booster Club’s annual Chili Cook-Off and Supper. This is the booster club’s largest fundraiser of the year, and the evening provides tremendous support for Eagle athletics, including the “Soaring Eagle” scholarships awarded at the spring athletic banquet. Throughout the evening, the TCA junior class will offer a variety activities in Eagle Gym, including fun inflatables for kids of all ages. The evening ends with the preparation of the turkeys and the placing of these soon-to-be delicious birds in the bonfire. You just have to see it to believe it!

On Friday morning, TCA students gather at the pit for the removal of the turkeys and just a little while later, students will be dismissed to join their parents for a delicious Thanksgiving lunch in Barber Gym courtesy of the TCA Parent-Teacher Fellowship. After lunch, families are free to leave and enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday.

This description of Turkey in the Ground is being painted with very broad strokes, and much more detailed information will come your way soon.

  1. Plan to help! This is a huge event and we need your help to pull it off!  Volunteers will be needed to set up, clean up and donate a variety of items including thawed, 12-15 pound turkeys (bigger or frozen turkeys will not be accepted).

  2. Order your TIG 2016 t-shirt! Offered by the junior class as a part of their fundraising efforts for their spring banquet, these shirts are not only fun to wear at TIG, but as TCA spirit wear on Fridays at school.  The order form link is below.

  3. RSVP for the Thanksgiving Lunch for parents and kids.

  4. Plan to be there! The events of these two days comprise the biggest and most memorable events of the school year!  Turkey in the Ground and the Thanksgiving lunch are wonderful, one-of-a-kind traditions that you and your children will not want to miss.
